Fair Housing Scholarship
People’s Self-Help Housing Offers Two Scholarships
April is National Fair Housing Month. In recognition of Fair Housing Month, People's Self-Help Housing, Inc. will award two $500 scholarships to Lewis County High School seniors and students earning their GED at the Lewis County Adult Education Center.
This year marks the 55th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act passed by Congress in April, 1968. The Fair Housing Act provides equal opportunity to all who buy, sell, rent, finance, or insure housing. It broadens the real estate market by making all housing and property available to all Kentuckians and protects the individual's basic right to choose where they want to live.
The Fair Housing Act prohibits anyone being denied the opportunity to rent a home or obtain a mortgage to buy a home due to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status or handicap. Those denied housing for these reasons often do not understand their rights under fair housing laws and may not realize that they have been the object of discrimination.
