Homeownership:Frequently Asked Questions

I am interested in buying a new home. Where do I begin?
You are welcome to stop by our main office and speak with one of our staff.  They can provide you with an initial intake form and answer any questions you may have.  You can also call (606)796-6333 and request that an intake form be mailed to you, or you can access the form on our web site (click on Applications for Housing Programs).  Send the completed intake form along with the credit report fee to PSHH or drop it off at our office.  Credit report fees are $15 for individuals and $20 for a couple.

What if there are problems on my credit report?
PSHH homeownership counselors will work with you to address any problems that may appear on your credit report. In general, any non-medical debt (e.g., collection debts, delinquent payments) must be addressed before you can move forward. If you have filed bankruptcy, you must wait at least 12 months from the date of the bankruptcy discharge before you would be eligible to apply for a home.

Does PSHH build outside of Lewis County?
No, PSHH builds new homes only in Lewis County, Kentucky.

Do I need to own property in order to qualify for a home?
No, PSHH has building lots available throughout Lewis County for new home construction.  However, if you already own property, PSHH can build on it provided the building site meets all requirements for new home construction.  We can also replace your existing home with a new home on the same site if your old home is beyond repair.

Are PSHH homes free for those with low incomes?
No, PSHH homeowners assume a mortgage like any other homeowner. Low interest rates and deferred/forgivable loans offered by PSHH can make a new home affordable to households with as little as $600 per month income.

Do I qualify for a PSHH house if I am working?
If you are working, you must have at least six months of continuous, stable employment history for PSHH to consider your application. Your total annual household income cannot exceed the income guidelines listed on the Current Annual Household Income Limits page.

If I die, what happens to my home?
PSHH encouarges all homeowners to make a will stating your wishes for what happens to your home after you die.  Depending on your wishes, PSHH staff will work with your heirs to keep the home in your family.  If your heirs do not wish to keep the home, our staff will also be available to work with them to sell the home.
